The Short Version: You Own The Bottles

Every Compass booking works the same way. Once your menu and guest count are set, we send you a shopping list: exactly which bottles, how many of each, and where you can buy them at ordinary retail prices. You purchase the alcohol, we handle absolutely everything else, and whatever is unopened at the end of the night goes back in your garage, not ours.

This is not a workaround. It is how mobile bar service is structured in New Jersey, and once hosts understand it, most of them prefer it.

Why The Model Saves You Money

When a venue sells you a bar package, you are paying above retail for every bottle: their cost, their markup, and their pricing per drink built to protect them if your guests drink less than expected. When you buy the bottles yourself, you pay what the liquor store charges. On a wedding with a hundred guests, the difference is not small.

The second saving is invisible until the party ends: the leftovers. A venue keeps unpoured product. With the BYOB model, the case of bourbon your guests did not finish is still your case of bourbon.

What Compass Actually Brings

Everything except the alcohol: the trailer, professional bartenders, mixers, fresh juice, housemade syrups, ice, cups, garnishes, coolers, setup, and breakdown. You will not run to the store during the party for tonic, and you will not bag ice for two hours the morning of your wedding. The shopping list covers the bottles; we cover the bar.

How The Shopping List Gets Sized

The list is built from three inputs: your guest count, your hours of service, and the menu we design together. A summer party built on margaritas burns through tequila and triple sec; a backyard barbecue running on beer and seltzer needs volume, not variety. Because the list is written against your actual menu, you buy what will be poured instead of guessing at a wall of bottles.

Planning tip: buy from a store that takes returns. Most NJ liquor stores accept returns on unopened bottles, which means the safety margin on your shopping list can cost you nothing.

What A Typical Shopping List Looks Like

Here is the shape of a real list for a hundred guest wedding running five hours with two signature cocktails, beer, wine, and seltzer. The signatures anchor the top: the exact tequila and triple sec counts for the margarita, the bourbon count for the smash, each sized against how those drinks actually pour at wedding pace. Below that, wine cases split roughly two thirds white and rosé to one third red for a warm month event, a beer and seltzer count matched to the crowd, and a sparkling line if there is a toast.

Every line item includes the bottle size to buy, because a liter and a fifth are not the same purchase, and the totals carry a small buffer of sealed bottles you can return. Hosts routinely tell us the list took less time than one trip down the aisle of a liquor store used to.

Where The BYOB Model Works Across New Jersey

We pour under this model everywhere we serve: backyards, private lots, and venues that welcome outside bar service across Toms River, Point Pleasant, Asbury Park, Red Bank, Long Beach Island, and Princeton. Shore towns are our home turf, and the model travels inland just as well. If your wedding is a backyard event, the backyard wedding bar checklist covers placement, insurance, and municipal rules. If you are still weighing your options, the honest trailer bar vs. caterer’s bar comparison lays out the cost structures side by side.

The Questions Everyone Asks

Can guests be served if it is not a licensed venue? At private events, you are hosting and we are serving on your behalf, with trained bartenders who check IDs and manage service responsibly. Is Compass insured? Fully, with certificates available for any venue or planner who asks. Do you serve guests who skip the alcohol? Mocktails get the same fresh ingredients as everything else on the menu.

If your date is coming up, send it through the Check Your Date form or call (908) 481-5819. We will tell you exactly what the bar would look like for your event, shopping list included.

BYOB Questions, Answered

Yes, at private events. In New Jersey the host purchases the alcohol at retail and Compass provides the trailer, bartenders, mixers, ice, and service. Trained bartenders check IDs and manage responsible service, and Compass carries full insurance with certificates available for any venue or planner who asks.
You never have to guess. Compass builds a shopping list from your guest count, hours of service, and the menu designed for your event, down to the bottle. Buy from a store that accepts returns on sealed bottles and the safety margin on the list costs you nothing.
It goes home with you. You bought the bottles, so every unopened bottle is still yours after the party, unlike a venue bar package where unpoured product stays with the venue.
Peak season Saturdays from May through October book out months ahead, especially at the shore. Send your date through the Check Your Date form or call (908) 481-5819 and Compass will confirm availability quickly, shopping list included.
