Race Day In Far Hills

The race ends. The good times don't. On Saturday, October 17, the Far Hills Race Meeting filled the Somerset Hills with its annual day of steeplechase racing, and when the last race was run, the celebration moved to a private home in Far Hills for the after party. Compass kept the drinks flowing from race day straight into the evening.

It was a different kind of event for Compass in two ways. It took the bar up into the Somerset Hills, well outside the Jersey Shore towns where most of the season has been spent. And the trailer stayed home. This one called for the wooden mobile bar.

The Setup

Compass Mobile Bar wooden satellite bar set up on a paver patio in Far Hills, NJ for a race day after party

The bar went up on a paver patio at the foot of the backyard steps: Compass's round wooden mobile bar in the center, a black high top cocktail table on either side, and the framed drink menu standing on the bar top. Wine and spirits lined the back of one high top, and the fall leaves did the rest of the decorating. No trailer, no driveway, no leveling. Just a bar where the party already was.

A Menu Built For Race Day

Every Compass menu is designed for the event in front of it, and race day got four drinks with names that only make sense after a day at the track. Two of them lean on housemade syrups, two lean on bourbon, and one turns coffee into a tequila drink. Here is the full board, exactly as it was poured:

The Farm Needs MoneyVodka, housemade passionfruit vanilla syrup, club soda
Americana Old FashionedBourbon, housemade apple pie syrup, bitters
Better Me Than YouBourbon, fresh lime juice, orange juice, bitters
Wanted: Dead or AliveCoffee infused tequila, Sarti, Amaro Nonino, fresh lemon juice

That is the Compass approach to every menu: a short list, built for the crowd, named for the day, with the syrups made in house. The same thinking named the drinks at a Manasquan block party and the menu board at the Giants tailgate at MetLife.

The Bar Without The Trailer

All four, lined up on the wooden bar: dried citrus and apple garnishes, housemade syrups.

The trailer is the centerpiece of most Compass events, but not every party has a driveway or a lawn it can roll onto. Patios behind houses, terraced backyards, courtyards, and spaces up a flight of steps all rule out a trailer. The wooden mobile bar fixes that. It sets up where the trailer cannot go and brings the same experience: professional bartenders, a custom menu, full bar service, and everything a host needs except the bottles.

Compass runs BYOB, so the host buys the alcohol from a shopping list sized to the menu and the guest count, and the alcohol calculator does the math if you want a head start.
